So you’ve decided to start your own business? That’s great news…but where to start? Besides a brilliant idea, a business plan and some start-up funds you’ll obviously need somewhere to base yourself. With the advent of the internet era, it is easier than ever for budding entrepreneurs to set up from home, because all that’s really needed is a networked computer and you have the whole world at your finger tips.
Of course, home-based businesses also have a competitive advantage over other businesses within their industry, because with reduced overheads they should be able to offer better prices too. Plus, surely it’s a lot nice rolling out of bed at 8:30, putting the kettle on and strolling into work…in your spare room!
It goes without saying that any home office should be comfortable and, ultimately, it should FEEL like an office. So probably best not to have a bed, wardrobe, toys or clutter in there as it doesn’t really help you get into a professional mindset.
So a home office should be different to the rest of the house. Perhaps you could have nice, varnished floors; an executive desk with a warm, Tuscany Brown finish; a desk lamp for those dark, winter days when you want to create a cosy feel to the office.
Of course, you can go over board on the furniture and forget that you are actually a 21st century business operating in the digital era. So you’re going to need to assess your technological requirements too.
Firstly, you’ll need a high-speed ADSL broadband connection. Then, a high-specification desktop computer with at least 2GB RAM, a large screen and an ergonomic keyboard.
Although email and digital storage certainly help to reduce the need to print these days, you WILL still need to print…so you may want to consider Zebra printers if you’re going to be producing labels, for example, or simply opt for one of the many high quality Toshiba printers. Essentially, the type of printer you opt for will depend on the nature of your business and what you need to print.
Once you’ve set up your home office the way you like it, you’re good to go. The procedures for launching your business is from here on in not too dissimilar to that of a normal business…assuming you already have your website up and running, you need to market it accordingly and be creative about how you bring in new custom.
And remember, because you are a home-based business, you need to play to your strengths. Check what your competitors are charging for your product or service and see how much you can afford to undercut them by, whilst still maintaining a profit, of course!
